The emails and phone calls I receive tell me that a lot of you have done your homework on Milky Spore. But for those who may be new to this all-natural long term solution to Japanese Beetles, grubs, and moles, here’s a quick review.
Milky Spore is a bacteria-Bacillus popilliae by name. This bacteria is host specific, meaning in this case that it will only attack the grubs of one species, the Japanese beetle. This is important to know, because you can use it in confidence that it will not harm earthworms or other beneficial soil dwellers.
Japanese beetles lay their eggs in the ground, where they hatch and feed on grass and plant roots through the fall and again in the spring. During this time they can cause tremendous damage in two ways: First, they eat the roots of your lawn, weakening or even killing it, and second, they attract burrowing and digging animals that feed on grubs, ruining your lawn further in their pursuit. Finally, when summer arrives, the grub morphs into the adult Japanese beetle, which causes devastating damage above ground, devouring ornamentals, flowers and plants of many kinds. The beetle returns to the soil to lay eggs, and the cycle is repeated.
Milky Spore attacks the beetle during its vulnerable grub stage. You just deposit the powdery spore on your lawn, where it is eaten by the grub as it feeds. The bacteria multiplies in the grubs body, weakening and within a few days, killing it. When it dies it releases billions more spores, which go on to infect more grubs. Eventually the grubs feeding and dieing of the spore spread it throughout your property, and your grub and beetle problems are eliminated!
Milky Spore is not a quick fix. It is entirely dependent on the grubs to spread and strengthen it in your soil, but once it is spread, you’ll be protected for 10, 12, even 15 years with no further treatment! No grubs, no moles, no Japanese Beetles.
And the best part is, your lawn is safe for kids, pets wildlife and beneficial insects. No harmful chemicals, just a natural, highly effective, and long lasting cure. If you want to know more, read our “Milky Spore FAQ’s”.
