Maybe you are way ahead of me. But right now, my fall yard chores are lagging behind, while Thanksgiving is barreling down the highway towards me, and I know the 2 of them are going to collide.
If you’re in the same boat, make the collision work for you. While you finish the yard clean up, keep an eye out for the makings of your holiday decorations. Evergreen clippings can be tied together to make swags, or attached to wire forms for wreaths. Interesting branches can become centerpieces, as can pine cones and berries.
I can shape my overgrown boxwoods, and stick bits of those bright green glossy clippings into shaped florist foam to make a wreath or decorative ball. Add a fall colored ribbon and I’m done!
While I’m raking leaves, I can collect pine cones, acorns, and other interesting seed pods to fill a glass vase and anchor a dried flower or twig arrangement.
Holly, magnolias, and dogwoods all have the potential to make striking arrangements.
Later, a few trimmings from pines, firs, hollies and cedars tied together with a bow will make lovely swags.
So this weekend when you’re outside working, take a deep breath, enjoy the beauty of fall, and remember, you aren’t behind on your yard work, you’re ahead on your decorating!
