The leaves have fallen, the flowers are gone, plants are going dormant. So what is there to look at in your garden? Take a critical assessment.
If your yard lacks interest in the fall and winter, now’s the time to find out where, and improve the view. By the time spring arrives, your attention will turn the the summer garden, so plan now for next fall. Make a note of lifeless areas, and jot down some ideas for improvement. Here are a few ways to add interest to your fall and winter landscape:
- Ornamentals- Try pampas grass for striking contrast to fall leaves.
- Berries- Hollies, Pyrocantha, crabapple and nandina
- Evergreens-Evergreens come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and offer gorgeous contrast to fall leaves, snowfalls, and the barren winter landscape.
- Bark-try birches, crepe myrtles, cherries are some choices for attractive bark.
- Shapes- Weeping cherries, corkscrew willows and stately conifers show off once the leaves are down.
- Statuary-Add interest with garden statues, benches, and other ornaments. Use these elements sparingly to draw the eye, or highlight a plant.
It may be too late for you to do any planting now, but plan now, plant later and grow a beautiful view from your window all year round.
